Downtown Boca Raton grew up along Federal Highway, and its center of gravity today is Mizner Park. The site was once the Boca Raton Mall. In the late 1980s the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency acquired the 30-acre property, took the mall down, and built a mixed-use “urban village” in its place, with shops, restaurants, offices, and apartments set around a long public park. Mizner Park opened on January 11, 1991. An amphitheater sits at its north end, and an art museum moved there in 2001.

A few blocks south, Old Town Hall still anchors the older part of downtown. Designed by Addison Mizner and completed by architect William Alsmeyer in 1927, it now houses the Boca Raton Historical Society’s history museum, with Sanborn Square beside it.
