What stood here before

This corner of downtown has a long hotel history. In 1910, Mary Purnell built the Floronton Hotel at 1st Avenue North and 2nd Street. The Army Air Corps used it during World War II, and in later decades it ran as the Toffenetti Hotel and then the Tropicana. In 1986 it was converted to offices and became the headquarters of the Bay Plaza Corporation. It stayed in place until it was demolished to make way for the ONE project, and the local preservation group Preserve the ‘Burg now lists it among the historic buildings the city has lost.
