Updated
Davis Islands sits in Hillsborough Bay at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, just south of downtown Tampa. A century ago, most of it was underwater. In 1924, Tampa native D.P. “Dave” Davis bought two small marshy islands, Little Grassy Key and Big Grassy Key, along with the bay bottom around them. That October, dredges began pumping sand from the bay night and day to build the islands up. As part of his deal with the city, Davis agreed to keep the new land at least 700 feet off Bayshore Boulevard, to pay for a bridge, and to set aside parkland. Marjorie Park, which he named for his wife, Marjorie Merritt Davis, is still there beside the city’s municipal yacht basin.
The plural in the name is accurate. A canal still splits the land, and the islands were originally three until fill for the airport runway joined two of them. Today the islands mix homes from the 1920s boom, some built in Spanish and Italian styles, with newer houses and condominiums. There are cafés and shops along East Davis Boulevard, tennis courts and a public pool, the seaplane basin, and Peter O. Knight Airport, a general-aviation field at the south end. Near the airport, the dog beach on Severn Avenue has a fenced off-leash area.
Getting to the AnswersMD Tampa office
Most trips off the island start on Davis Boulevard, cross the channel, and reach the mainland near Bayshore Boulevard. From there, the AnswersMD Tampa flagship office at 2330 W Horatio St, Tampa, FL 33609 is a short trip northwest through South Tampa. By road it’s about:
- 2.5 miles from Marjorie Park
- 2.7 miles from the shops on East Davis Boulevard
- 4.8 miles from the dog beach at the south end of the islands
One practice for the whole household
A Davis Islands household might include a newborn, a teenager heading out on the water, and parents juggling both, sometimes with a grandparent living nearby. Coordinating separate pediatric and adult offices for all of them takes time.
AnswersMD cares for whole families, and the Tampa office sees patients from newborns up. Dr. W. Andrew “Drew” Meriwether, MD, FAAP, DABIM, is board-certified in both pediatrics and internal medicine, so he can care for parents and children in the same family. Douglas Shapiro, DO, the founder of AnswersMD, is a board-certified family physician who also sees members at the Tampa office. Dr. Shapiro brought together a team of accomplished physicians who share his view that primary care should be personal and unhurried.
What membership looks like day to day
Island life tends to run on its own rhythm: school drop-off over the bridge, a morning on the boat, a workday downtown just across the channel. Concierge care is meant to fit around that, not the other way around:
- An intentionally small patient panel, so your physician knows you and your family’s history.
- Visits that last as long as you need, whether it’s a sick visit for a toddler or a long conversation about your own health.
- Direct cell access to your physician by phone or text, including evenings and weekends.
- Specialist coordination. When you need a specialist, your physician helps arrange the referral and stays involved.
Looking ahead, not just catching up
A lot of Davis Islands life happens outdoors: on the water, at the tennis courts, or in the parks. AnswersMD’s focus on prevention is meant to help you keep doing those things. That includes executive physicals scheduled around your calendar and advanced early-detection testing chosen with your physician based on your history and goals.
House calls are available on a case-by-case basis.
